Science Fiction in Africa

Science Fiction in Africa

Feature length radio documentary. Producer. BBC World Service.

I’d spent my life reading Sci-Fi set in a dystopian LA, a futuristic Tokyo or a ravaged New York. When I read the brilliant Lauren Beukes' Zoo City, set in my own South Africa, I realised that countries across Africa had their own relationships with the future and technology - and found myself in a whole new world of SF. I asked her to present the documentary, which touched on explorations of the future from writers and filmmakers in Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria with contributions from Nnedi Okorafor and Neil Blomkamp, director of Oscar-nominated District-9.
