Self-contained pockets of the world—islands are packed with stories.  We went to go get them. 

Khortytsia - ukraine

There’s an Island of cossacks in the middle of the Dnieper river. Real ones. Keeping traditions alive, and cultivating national identity. And when night falls on Khortytsia, another symbol of national pride comes to life. 

bugala - uganda

There’s an archipelago in the middle of Lake Victoria. Bugala, the biggest island, is not only home to a dense jungle, palm plantations and a thriving community. It’s also the site of one woman’s empire.

Here are some of the things I’m proud of.

They include—but are not limited to—developing and presenting a mixed-reality series, breaking Wikipedia records, training journalists around the world and telling stories about Cossacks, fishing, Apartheid, sport, Shakespeare, science fiction, deafness, Azeri oil, the world’s oldest passenger ferry, and pagans.
